How We Evaluate Mattresses
We evaluate mattresses through research-based firmness and construction analysis, not hands-on testing: we compare manufacturer spec sheets, published ILD figures where a brand discloses them, construction type, comfort-layer thickness, and aggregated third-party reviewer themes. We do not physically test mattresses, never publish prices or star ratings, always name at least one honest downside, and report only firmness/construction facts — never a health outcome.
What "firmness and construction analysis" means
- Disclosed ILD — where a brand publishes Indentation Load Deflection for a comfort layer or support core, we report the exact figure and note it's only directly comparable within similar constructions.
- Manufacturer specifications — self-reported firmness label, construction type (memory foam, latex, hybrid, innerspring), comfort-layer thickness, and any proprietary-material caveats that mean ILD doesn't apply.
- Aggregated reviewer themes — recurring third-party firmness impressions where a brand's own figure is unavailable, described qualitatively and labeled as derived, never reproduced as ratings or review counts.
Why we lead with disclosure, not the brand's number
The mattress category is dominated by content farms that repeat a brand's 1-10 firmness number as if it were a lab measurement — even though there's no accredited body standardizing that scale across brands. We compete where the answer is a citable fact those pages gloss over: what ILD actually measures, which brands disclose it, why identical ILD feels different across constructions, and how body weight changes perceived firmness. If a category's marketing is mostly self-reported labeling, we say so.
Our compliance, honesty, and safety rules
- No prices, ever — we link to a live Amazon search so the price is always current.
- No star ratings or review counts — per Amazon's Operating Agreement.
- Always a downside — every pick names at least one honest drawback.
- Firmness/construction facts, not health claims — we state a mattress's reported firmness and construction; we never claim it prevents or treats back pain or any condition, and we route real pain concerns to a physician or physical therapist.
- Self-reported numbers labeled as such — a brand's 1-10 firmness figure is flagged as a brand claim, not an industry-standard measurement.
- Affiliate disclosure — as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.
Methodology FAQ
No. We don't buy or lab-test mattresses. Every recommendation is a research-based analysis built from manufacturer spec sheets and public product pages, cross-checked against third-party mattress-review aggregators, and organized by firmness band, construction type, and disclosed ILD where available. We say this plainly so you can weigh our picks accordingly.
Prices change constantly and Amazon's own page is the only reliable source at the moment you buy. We link to a live Amazon search for each product instead. Amazon's Operating Agreement also restricts how affiliates display pricing.
We don't display them. Amazon's Operating Agreement restricts how Associates present ratings and review data, so we describe general firmness and construction facts instead — without reproducing review text or numeric scores.
Yes. Every product we recommend includes at least one honest, specific drawback — an undisclosed ILD figure, a proprietary material that can't be compared across brands, a construction tradeoff, or a narrower firmness range than the marketing implies.
No. We report firmness, ILD, and construction facts — what a mattress is built from and how firm it is reported to be — never a claim that it treats, prevents, or relieves back pain or any other condition. For a specific pain or medical concern, we route readers to a physician or licensed physical therapist, never to a health claim of our own.
